Blue Plaques are a tradition that dates back 150 years, but there aren’t many for music. Thanks to BBC Music Day this has all changed.
For BBC Music Day, Thursday 15 June 2017, all 40 BBC Local Radio stations and Asian Network in England have teamed up with the British Plaque Trust to unveil 47 historic Blue Plaques celebrating iconic musicians and venues.
Those honoured with a Blue Plaque include David Bowie (with not one but two plaques), broadcaster John Peel, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and Delia Derbyshire who composed the Doctor Who theme tune.
On BBC Radio 3, 15 June 2017, Essential Classics, Rob Cowan played Holst’s A Moorside Suite from this CD in celebration of the band’s new plaque.
Other music on this CD includes Vaughan Williams’ Overture for Brass Band: Henry the V, Malcolm Arnold’s Fantasy for Brass Band, Dean Goffin’s Rhapsody in Brass, Eric Ball’s A Kensington Concerto, Granville Bantock’s Comedy Overture: The Frogs (of Aristophanes) and George Lloyd’s Diversions on a Brass Theme.
