Willowhayne Records WHR045 @ £14.25*

In February 2018, BBC Young Musician Grand Finalist Ben Goldscheider will release his first recording on Willowhayne Records. Aptly entitled Debut, the album will take listeners on a journey through the musical development of the horn through a selection of pieces from the classical, romantic, early and late twentieth century and the 21st century. In the same year that Ben won the Brass Category Final of the 2016 BBC Young Musician Competition, he also secured a coveted place at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin, studying under Radek Baborák. Ben is joined by pianist Daniel Hill for this recording; the two met whilst Ben studied at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, before joining forces again for Ben’s performance in the BBC Young Musician Final. The disc will feature works by Jörg Widmann, Nikolaus von Krufft, Robert Schumann, York Bowen, Volker David Kirchner, and the piece that earned him his winning place in the BBC Young Musician Final: Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Concert Étude for solo horn. Ben comments:

”I’m extremely proud to present my debut album. I hope to capture the development of the horn as it grew from its natural state with no valves, to the full double chromatic horn today, and subsequently show how the music written for the instrument changed and became more virtuosic.”
Ben looks forward to an eventful year ahead, with engagements including Mozart’s Concerto for Horn and Orchestra No. 4 in E flat major at the Berlin Philarmonie with the Sinfonie Orchester Berlin in November, Wigmore Hall with Julian Prégardien and Christoph Schnackertz, joining Daniel Barenboim and Michael Barenboim to perform Alexander Goehr’s Horn Trio in the Pierre Boulez Saal, as well as a series of concerts with the Boulez Ensemble.
