Order Champs Hill Records CHRCD136 at £11* (* + P&P)
The winner of the BBC Young Musician Competition in 2012, Laura van der Heijden makes her debut recording with music of the Soviet era, inspired by her teachers, and by a deep appreciation of “the immense value of great art, music, and literature in Russian-speaking countries….[I] discovered the link which exists between the ‘Russian soul’ and the spiritual virtue of art”. Laura also writes: “The pieces on this album are in many ways a response to the decree issued by the communist party on the 10th of February 1948, which further restricted composers’ freedom of expression”. Laura has already made a name for herself as a very special emerging talent, captivating audiences and critics alike with her insightful and faithful interpretations. She has appeared with leading UK orchestras, such as the Philharmonia, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, European Union Chamber and English Chamber Orchestras. Her recital partner on this recording is Russian-British pianist Petr Limonov. The works on this disc by Prokofiev, Myaskovsky and Shaporin were also the fruit of the composers’ collaboration with Mstislav Rostropovich, whose talent and energy catalysed them into writing for cello.

Roger Sacheverell Coke (1912–1972) Piano Concertos Nos 3, 4 & 5 Piano Concerto No 3 in E flat major Op 30
ALL FIRST RECORDINGS
Gramophone “Hats off to Simon Callaghan, whose earlier pioneering disc of Coke’s solo piano music was rightly warmly and widely praised. He throws himself into the concerto’s physically taxing, Scriabinesque sound world with passion, total commitment and, it seems, heartfelt affection.”
The late Romanticism of Roger Sacheverell Coke will appeal to anyone who enjoys Rachmaninov or Delius, Grainger or Scriabin. If that sounds an intriguingly eclectic mix, Coke establishes his own distinctive voice, and this is an important addition to the Romantic Piano Concerto series. AUTUMN 2017 CD @ £10.50*
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
Sinfonia Antartica (No. 7)* Four Last Songs (orch. Anthony Payne)† Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra‡
Mari Eriksmoen Soprano* Roderick Williams Baritone† Hélène Mercier Piano‡ Louis Lortie Piano‡ Bergen Philharmonic Choir* Edvard Grieg Kor* Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis
Chandos SACD CHSA5186 @£10.50* (from 1 January 2018 it will be £12.25*) Offer recently extended to 31 December 2017.
Gramophone “Baritone Roderick Williams is in resplendent voice and generates an unfailing eloquent rapport with Davis and company. All told, a distinguished release.”
Classical Source “This performance is simply magnificent. I found it utterly compelling and so true to the inherently fiery and concentrated rigour of the music that it was like hearing a masterpiece for the first time – as, indeed, in my case it was.”
The Times “… the Bergen Phil finds a clear affinity with the Sinfonia Antartica … there’s an inexorability about this performance and a strong tragic undertow that makes it a compelling listen throughout.
Davis authoritatively builds up the tension without any fussiness…balm is supplied by the cultivated baritone of Roderick Williams in Vaughan Williams’s little-known Four Last Songs “
This is the eagerly awaited final volume in our historic series of Vaughan Williams’s Symphonies, started about twenty-five years ago by the late Richard Hickox, and recently continued by that other expert in British repertoire, Sir Andrew Davis. The album features an exceptional cast and a rare combination of repertoire. While the indefatigable piano duo Louis Lortie and Hélène Mercier tackle the virtuosic Double Piano Concerto, the baritone Roderick Williams OBE offers breathtaking interpretations of the rarely heard, yet passionate Four Last Songs, in Anthony Payne’s delicate and imaginative orchestration, premiered at the BBC Proms only four years ago. Vaughan Williams based the disc’s centrepiece, the majestic Sinfonia Antartica, on music he had written for the film Scott of the Antarctic only a few years before, stunningly evoking the implacable, frozen landscape of the Antarctic. All are supported by the impeccable Bergen orchestra and choirs and recorded in surround-sound. This album is a very special one, as is the now complete series.

Chandos SACD 5185
This SACD recording brings together some of Chandos’ greatest artists in a spellbinding programme.
It follows performances that The Guardian described as “a thrilling show of ferocity and feistiness” given by the same forces in January at the Barbican. After widely acclaimed recordings of Walton’s and Lutoslawski’s violin concertos, Tasmin Little again joins the BBC Symphony
Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner, in intensely expressive interpretations of the concertos by the Polish composers Karlowicz and Szymanowski.
All were written within the space of a generation (1902, 1916, and 1933), and yet they belong to quite different worlds. One was composed at a time of national occupation, another in the throes of wartime, and yet another at a time of national renewal. The first inhabits the lyrical tradition
developed by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, the second escapes towards Debussy and the exoticism of Mediterranean influences, while the third is imbued with the folk culture of the Tatra Mountains.

Romantic Piano Concerto, volume 71. CZERNY: Piano concertos with Howard Shelley (pianist and conductor), Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra
Who was Czerny? Child prodigy, pupil of Beethoven, taught Liszt, beautiful music. Czerny is now remembered largely for the numerous piano studies he wrote as pedagogical aids. Which makes Howard Shelley’s advocacy of the three virtuoso works for piano and orchestra recorded here, two of them for the first time, all the more welcome: this is music which cannot fail to appeal.
