Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) Late Piano Works
Fantasias Op 116, Intermezzos Op 117, Clavierstücke Op 118, Scherzo in E flat minor Op 4
The Sunday Times “These three gatherings of intermezzos and capriccios reflect a kind of ultimate distillation of the Beethovenian sonata. To hear them unfolded as beautifully as they are here is invigorating, insightful and a joy.”
About the music ….
Brahms announced his retirement from composing on more than one occasion, but these are among the last solo pieces he wrote for piano. By contrast, the Op 4 scherzo is the work of an eighteen-year old, and the earliest he approved for publication.
