Last Saturday saw Laura van der Heijden, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012, perform Dvorak’s Cello Concerto with the Colchester Symphony Orchestra conducted by Chris Phelps. The large audience witnessed a breath taking performance and were musically transported on a journey through the beautiful melodic lines of the concerto. Laura showed musical maturity way beyond her 16 years while the CSO unobtrusively beautifully shaped phrases to complement and accompany Laura.
The all Dvorak concert majestically began with an electric performance of the Carnival Overture. After the interval our musical treats continued with an exciting performance of Symphony No 7. With this concert, surely the CSO have sealed their place on the musical map – not just locally?
The CSO conducted by Chris Phelps are clearly an orchestra that plays together regularly and musically stays together when performing. They can be next heard in St Botolph’s Church on 11th May when International pianist, John Lill joins them for a concert including both Beethoven’s Piano Concert No 3 and Brahms’ Piano Concert No.2. On the 13th July the CSO will present an all Sibelius concert including one of my favourite symphonies, Sibelius’ No.5.
