CD reviews…

Alan Bullard writes music that is delightful to learn, and a pleasure for the listener.”  The American Organist Magazine

“Alan Bullard is one of those quiet composers who, almost unnoticed, goes about his business year on year writing effective, attractive, and eminently performable music in just about any genre he turns his pen to.” Classical Music Magazine

“This is the first CD entirely devoted to the choral music of Alan Bullard, the much-admired British composer who lives locally. The main work on this CD is Wondrous Cross based on The Seven Last Words of Christ, and comprises inspired musical settings of those words interspersed with traditional 18th century Easter Hymns and an American spiritual. Bullard gathers these elements and cleverly adds his own unique compositional approach to offer a new moving work for Passiontide.

The charming rendition of There is a green hill far away is followed by an understandably rhythmically agitated and discordant Second and Third Words.  This work was written in 2011 and is dedicated to Lion Walk United Reformed Church, Colchester

The choir presents all the works on this CD with clear choral lines and contrasting passion where Bullard’s music demands.” Daily Gazette, Colchester

Largely published by Oxford University Press, this new recording features a varied collection of his recent sacred choral music, suitable for use throughout the church’s year, including his 2012 large-scale cantata Wondrous Cross.

Sung by the highly-accomplished Chapel Choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge, directed by Sarah MacDonald, and including a setting of the Evening Canticles written for them.

All of the works on this disc are new to the commercial CD catalogue.
